Lockup Period (Lightning)
The time BTC remains committed to a payment channel, unavailable for on-chain use until the channel closes or settles.
The lockup period of a Lightning channel is the duration that funds remain committed to the channel's 2-of-2 multisig output, unavailable for on-chain spending until the channel closes.
The mechanics:
- Opening a channel publishes a funding transaction to the blockchain that locks BTC in a 2-of-2 multisig between you and your channel partner.
- For the duration that the channel is open, those funds are not directly spendable on-chain. They can only be transferred off-chain between you and your partner via channel state updates.
- Closing the channel broadcasts a settlement transaction that unlocks the funds back to each party's on-chain wallet according to the current channel balance.
The lockup period is open-ended. A channel can stay open for hours or for years; the only requirement is that both parties remain connected periodically (or use watchtowers) to detect and respond to any unilateral close attempts.
What you give up during the lockup:
- On-chain liquidity. The locked BTC isn't directly accessible. Need to spend on-chain? Either close the channel (with its on-chain fee cost) or use submarine swaps to move balance between Lightning and on-chain without closing.
- Channel partner dependency. Your funds are co-controlled with your partner. If they go offline permanently, you can force-close (recovering after a CSV-locked window), but the process is more involved than spending an on-chain UTXO.
- Static-channel-backup risk. If you lose your Lightning node state without an SCB, recovery requires force-closing channels with their last-known state, which might be older than current.
What you gain:
- Near-instant Lightning payments. Sub-second settlement on payments within the channel network.
- Near-zero fees for in-channel and routed payments.
- Significant privacy. Routed Lightning payments don't leave a permanent on-chain trail.
Operationally, the right balance is usually to keep enough on-chain BTC for non-Lightning needs and commit the rest to channels sized for actual use. For active routing nodes, channels stay open for months to years. For consumer wallets, channels can be more transient depending on liquidity needs.
The "lockup period" framing is a useful mental model for understanding the tradeoff: you give up immediate on-chain access in exchange for fast, cheap, private off-chain payments while the channel is open.
