Home Glossary B Burn Address

Burn Address

An address for which no private key is known, effectively removing any BTC sent there from circulation.

Share

Sending BTC to a burn address is like throwing money into a digital black hole. Commonly starting with ‘1BitcoinEater...’ or other patterns, these addresses are intentionally created with no known corresponding private keys. Thus, the coins can never be spent again.

While sometimes used as a proof of token destruction or to reduce supply, sending BTC to a burn address is irreversible. It can also be done for symbolic gestures—such as burning coins to show commitment to a project—or to destroy confiscated or compromised funds. Regardless of purpose, sending BTC there essentially removes them from the market forever.
